TOWN THROWBACK: Five memorable victories on Boxing Day

Liam Ryder26 Dec 2020 - 08:30

Despite us not being in action this festive period, Steven Holliday takes a look at some of the Seasiders' most memorable wins on Boxing Day...

Gell's half-way line stunner (2016/17)
Chris Hardy’s Whitby side came out on top thanks to Adam Gell’s dramatic 40-yard strike and a Shane Bland penalty save. Whitby went ahead after 15 minutes when a Callum Martin corner was flicked on by Luke Bythway and Matthew Tymon was there on the goal-line to turn the ball into the net. With 26 minutes gone, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Andrew May brought down Luke Armstrong inside the Whitby area. Up stepped Matty Pattison who saw his low penalty well saved and held by Bland to keep Whitby in front. Early in the second half, Bland did well to push away former Blue Richard Pell’s 18-yard header before they doubled their lead after 64 minutes. Spartans' keeper Paul Woolston raced out of his goal to clear ahead of Tymon but the ball went straight to Gell just inside the visitors half and he sent the ball back over the head of the hesitant keeper and into the back of net, much to the delight of the Whitby fans. Blyth fought back and five minutes later pulled a goal back when Armstrong beat Mark Robinson on the byline before his low driven cross into the six-yard box entered the Whitby net via Bland’s legs but Whitby held on to take the three points.

Armstrong's late winner (2013/14)
Ex-Spartan Graeme Armstrong gave Whitby the victory in this boxing day clash with a goal three minutes from time. Blyth had taken the lead on 22 minutes when Dan McGuire laid the ball back for Robbie Dale to fire past Shane Bland and into the roof of the net from 20-yards out. Whitby hit back and equalised on the half hour when another ex-Spartan, Lee Mason, saw his right-wing corner driven past Michael Misiewicz by Shane Henry for 1-1. With three minutes remaining, Armstrong found space on the right edge of the Blyth box before curling the ball around Misiewicz and inside his right hand post to give Whitby their first victory over Blyth since November 2004.

Robinson's 100th goal (2006/07)
Whitby went ahead after just three minutes when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of Ferriby's penalty area. Up stepped Matty Appleby who curled the ball around the wall and past Ferriby goalkeeper Antoni Pecora for 1-0. The visitors hit back almost immediately as Joel Hartley's cross fell to Chris Bolder on the edge of the box and he drove his shot past David Campbell for the equaliser. Hartley then saw his shot caught at the second attempt by Campbell, before at the other end Graham Robinson put the home side back in front with a looping header over Pecora from Appleby's cross for his 100th goal for the club. Ferriby's Sam Agar then saw Campbell off his line but his chip from 25-yards went just over the bar. Whitby's Raw thought he had got the home sides' third goal only for Pecora to pull off a brilliant point blank save to keep the visitors in the game. Then Ferriby's Paul Foot saved the day again, heading Appleby's shot off the line. Whitby went further ahead on 65 minutes with Brunskill firing home from Phil Brumwell's free kick. Bradshaw then saw another effort superbly saved by Campbell at the far post. With eight minutes left Whitby got their fourth goal of the game when Tom Reid beat Leon Wainman down the wing and centred for Raw to fire low past Pecora and into the bottom corner of the net. The win moved Whitby up to fourth place in the league.

Brunskill's wonderful performance (2005/06)
Whitby forward Danny Brunskill finally found his goal scoring touch after 13 scoreless games for the club and he did it in style netting a hat-trick to beat league leaders Ferriby in at the Turnbull Ground. Whitby went ahead after just three minutes, when from a corner Aron Wilford rose highest at the far post to head home past Paul Sharp and score his 13th goal of the season. Ferriby hit back with Whitby goalkeeper Ben Escritt doing well to keep them at bay before Brunskill broke his duck in first half stoppage time. Karl Richards chipped the ball into the Ferriby box for Brunskill to turn on the spot and hammer the ball past Sharp and into the roof of the net. The visitors pulled a goal back on 69 minutes when Chris Bolder turned and fired past Escritt from eight yards before the league leaders drew level twelve minutes from time when a low driven cross from Chris Coupe saw Graham Botham slide in and divert the ball home for 2-2. With nine minutes left Whitby regained the lead when superb work from Wilford saw him beat Price and his right wing cross came back off the bar for Brunskill to somehow fire the ball home whilst laid on the ground. Whitby then hit Ferriby on the counter attack to wrap up the game in the very last minute. Wilford broke free down the left and squared to Brunskill who fired first time past Sharp to complete his hat-trick and give David Logan’s Whitby side the three points.

Leap-frogging league rivals (1991/92)
Whitby in third place leapfrogged neighbours Guisborough Town who started the day in second place thanks to a great 3-1 derby victory over the Priorymen in this Boxing Day fixture. Whitby went ahead after just seven minutes when they were awarded a free-kick for handball on the edge of the area. Gary Robinson stepped up and curled the ball around the visitor’s wall and past goalkeeper Tony Evans and into the bottom corner of the net. Twenty minutes later Steve Holmes was unlucky to see his 20-yard shot come back off the Whitby Crossbar but Guisborough equalised in the last minute of the half when Mike Priest played a neat one-two with Joseph Peel before blasting the ball past Whitby keeper Simon Bishop for 1-1. Four minutes into the second half Whitby regained the lead and once again it was Robinson who scored, this time firing a free kick into the top corner of the net to give Evans no chance. Three minutes later Whitby wrapped up the game when Paul Pitman slotted the ball home from ten yards to put the result beyond doubt.
