Steven Holliday takes a look at some of the Seasiders' most memorable matches in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy...

Whitby Town 2-1 South Liverpool (1983)
Tony Lee’s Whitby side made it through to the first round of the FA Trophy thanks to a great victory over Northern Premier League side South Liverpool at the Turnbull Ground. Whitby had the first chance with Ronnie Sills back-heeling a free-kick from Micky Allen just wide of Hamilton’s post before they took the lead on nine minutes. Whitby were awarded another free-kick and Sills stepped up to blast the ball through the wall and into the top corner of the net. South Liverpool fought back with a header from Peacock just clearing David Coleby’s crossbar before Perry had a shot blocked. Les Scott’s free kick then found Derek Loadwick whose angled drive went just wide before Derek Hampton saw his shot turned around the post by Hamilton. Straight after half-time Mark Hine broke through but fired over from twelve yards out before Hampton doubled Whitby’s lead on 57 minutes when Loadwick was sent clear down the right wing and his cross into the box was headed home at point blank range by Hampton for 2-0. Sills then had a goal ruled out for offside before the visitors pulled a goal back with seven minutes to go when Thornton’s low drive beat Coleby but Whitby held on for the victory.

Leyland Motors 1-3 Whitby Town (1985)
Whitby travelled to North West Counties League side Leyland Motors and came away with a 3-1 victory thanks to two late Kevin March goals to make it through to the next round of the FA Trophy. Whitby had the first chance of the game when Stephen Balcombe’s flicked header from an Eddie Gray cross brought a fine save from goalkeeper Mick Stowell, playing his final game for Motors before joining 1st Division side Everton. David Lancaster then turned and shot straight at Whitby player-manager and goalkeeper David Harvey, before Alan Heaton had a goal ruled out after a free-kick was ordered to be taken again with Harvey making a fine save from Nigel Cudworth. Whitby broke the deadlock after 36 minutes when Gray and Phil Omoni combined to give Paul Sharkey the opening to beat defender Stuart Wilcock before shooting past Stowell. A minute before half time the home side equalised when they were awarded a penalty after Gray had fouled Lancaster. Kevin Tierney stepped up to beat Harvey from the spot. Twenty five minutes into the second half Whitby regained the lead when Balcombe’s inch perfect cross was volleyed home past Stowell by March from eight yards out, and March made the game safe a minute from time when he collected a pass from Omoni to round Stowell and score his fifth goal in six matches.

Whitby Town 1-0 Easington Colliery (1991)
A solitary Paul Pitman goal was enough to book Whitby’s place in the first round of the FA Trophy after a hard fought encounter at the Turnbull Ground, with the visitors going close to opening the scoring after seven minutes but Captain Peter Judson’s shot hit the post and rebounded into touch. Whitby’s captain Paul Burton then fired just wide following a Garry Robinson free-kick before Whitby keeper Simon Bishop did well to parry Judson’s shot with the loose ball scrambled clear by Paul Welham. Pitman then brought a good save from Easington goalkeeper Dave Stoker who managed to turn his header around the post. The only goal of the game came on 53 minutes when Steve Corden put Pitman through and the striker chipped the ball over the advancing Stoker and into the empty net. Bishop then saved well from Charlton’s low angled drive to keep Whitby in front and they held on for the victory.

Frickley Athletic 1-2 Whitby Town (1994)
Whitby fought back from a goal down to beat Northern Premier League side Frickley Athletic 2-1 to earn a place in the next round, after the home side had dominated the early exchanges with Hancock shooting straight at Whitby goalkeeper Matthew Coddington before Coddington did well to collect the ball from the advancing Brock. Paul Pitman then had a chance for the visitors when he broke through, but with only Sharpe to beat he shot straight at the keeper. Adrian Wells then put the home side in front when he headed home a Kelly cross totally unmarked at the back post. The second half started with Brock shooting just wide before Whitby equalised in the 66th minute when John Woods raced on to a long ball out of defence but collided with Sharpe and the ball fell to Pitman to shoot home into the empty net. Frickley were then reduced to ten men when Gary Hatto was sent off for a second bookable offence and Whitby scored the winner 13 minutes from time and from the resulting free kick, Gary Hinchley stepped up and his driven shot from 19-yards was deflected past Sharpe and into the back of the net for 2-1.

Whitby Town 2-2 Northwich Victoria (2010)
Tommy Cassidy’s Whitby side fought out a 2-2 draw with fellow Northern Premier League side Northwich Victoria at the Turnbull Ground after the game was delayed for an hour when the visitors' team bus had broken down en-route. Northwich opened the scoring in the 24th minute thanks to a mistake from Whitby goalkeeper Nick Liversedge. Andy Fowler scuffed a tame effort towards goal that Liversedge failed to hold with the ball going between his legs and into the net. Ibby Hassan then came to Whitby’s rescue hooking Wayne Riley’s free kick off his own goal line as they went in at half time a goal behind. Ten minutes into the second half Whitby equalised thanks to a superb goal scored by Chris Batchelor who waited for the ball to drop over his left shoulder before firing across keeper James Spencer and into the opposite top right corner of the net. David Southern then saw his header from point blank range well saved by Spencer before Whitby took the lead seven minutes from time when Tony Hackworth’s through ball sent Andy Campbell clear and he slotted the ball through the legs of Spencer from twelve yards out and into the net. But just a minute later the visitors were level when John McAliskey was left unmarked at the far post and he headed home to earn his side a reply in which Northwich won 1-0 thanks to a last minute goal.
