Whitby Town announced the signing of exciting midfield player Mackenzie Heaney last Thursday afternoon.
Heaney boasts some impressive achievements already in his footballing career, representing both Scotland and England at youth international level, and making it to the under-23 side for Newcastle United.
Now with the Blues, Heaney talks about his move to the club, his strengths, and what he's hoping to achieve in his first season at the Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.
The main attraction to Whitby Town for me is the fact that I've heard good things about the club. I've heard that it's a good club with a good fanbase who get behind the team. I think that the club is one of the best in the league and I've watched highlights of games on YouTube and been following the club on Twitter so I get the impression that it's a good team.
I know a few players at the club as well. I've played with Jamie Cobain at Newcastle and even though he is a couple of years older than me I've played with him for a season or two. He played right-back and I played right-wing so I've got a relationship with him. I've also played with him at West Auckland. I also played with Shane Bland for a short while but I was only with him for a few months at West Auckland.
I am really looking forward to playing at the new level because I felt that when I left Newcastle I should have been playing higher up than in the Northern League, and that's no disrespect to the Northern League. Because of a few personal issues that I've had, it was hard for me to get into a team higher up the pyramid so I'm really excited about this move. It's a new league for me, and there are new teams for me to play against in what I've heard is a very competitive league.
There are some big games in this league as well and I love a game with a good crowd as it gets lads up for games. When I've been with Newcastle and playing for England in the past I've played in front of big crowds and I like that because people thrive off it. Some people do and some people don't but I'm one who does as I feel that it makes me step up a level.
I try and work as hard as I can off the ball but my game is based more on the attacking side of things. I love to play behind the strikers but I try and do a defensive job for the team as well because I'm all about the team and I want to work hard for them. I like to get on the ball and help link play up between the deep-lying midfielders and the strikers. I also like to beat people around the box and get shots off. I love taking free-kicks, especially from the right side with me being left footed. That's probably the best way to describe me as a player.
I've got a very good winning mentality and I want to win in everything. I know people will think that I'm ambitious but I don't see why we can't go on and win everything. The way my mindset is, I want us to win as much as possible and I don't see why we can't do that.
