Shane Bland returned to Whitby Town ahead of the 2019/20 season, leading to much hype and excitement from Blues' supporters. The goalkeeper was an ever-present between the goalposts, making 42 appearances with seven clean sheets in return.
Bland gave us his take on the season just gone and reveals what he hopes will come of the new season when it gets underway.
Last season was something of a rollercoaster. It's frustrating that it has to be made void but the fact is that health comes first and that's the government's and the FA's decision to made the season void but I think it was a good one and we achieved a lot. We had some downs as well but I think there were plenty of positives.
On a personal note I was absolutely delighted to be back. It was a breath of fresh air for me and it always is playing for the club. I love the whole thing about playing for Whitby from turning up at the Turnbull seeing our supporters. They have been fantastic this season and the attendances have been as high as I've ever seen in my time with the club so hopefully we can continue that. The season overall was very enjoyable for me.
Every home game this season has been great in terms of crowd numbers. We've had huge crowds on several occasions and that's fantastic for the club. If we can get more done on the away side of things that will make the club even better. It would be good if we could have more supporters' coaches put on for our loyal fans, as well as the bus that we go on.
Even with the games in hand that we had, I feel that we had our chances to climb into the play-off spots before the season came to an end. We had a run of draws but I think that we would have had a chance as we got ourselves into a very good position to push for the play-offs. The draws didn't help but I would have hoped that we would have been able to claim our place in the play-offs if we were given the chance.
The highlight of the season for me was definitely the game against Gloucester, no doubt. Trecking down there on a four-and-a-half hour journey and be down to the bare bones with a goalkeeping coach coming on as a striker was incredible. The FA Cup run in itself was a big bonus.
Looking ahead I think we've got to continue what we're already doing and keep moving forwards. A few players have left the club which is disappointing but we've got a good group at the club and any new lads coming in need to be fit and fresh. We've got to keep going and carry on from where we finished last season and hopefully we can have another successful season.
