The versatile defender/midfielder joined Whitby Town from Scarborough Athletic in July 2014 and made his debut in the opening game of the season, a 2-1 defeat away to Stourbridge on the 16th August 2014, where he also scored his first goal for the Blues. He rejoined his former club Pickering Town in February 2016, his final appearance for the Blues coming on the 28th December 2015 against Frickley Athletic. In total, Liam made 70 appearances, scoring four goals.
My first impressions of the club were really good, I remember going on my first training session and Daz Williams really made me fit in quickly. It also helped that I knew Robbo and Macca, having previously played with them when I was younger. I was surprised how nice the Turnbull Ground was. I instantly had a love for the ground and thought I can’t wait to get on the pitch and play. Then I met a few of the fans, who were so polite and proper football fans who love their club and are 100% behind the players. So overall, I couldn’t fault the club at all.
How I came about signing for Whitby was really from two seasons before. I was playing for Pickering at the time and we played Whitby in pre-season and we beat them 5-2 and I probably had my best game of pre season that night. I remember playing against Daz and Macca in midfield. Macca mentioned it to me after the game, if I fancied it, but the manager at Pickering, Jimmy Reid got me back in love with football. I was enjoying my football so much at Pickering that I stayed, then the season after, we played Whitby in pre-season again. They beat us 3-1 and I played really well again, so the interest from Daz was there even greater and Macca asked me again but I still stayed loyal to Jimmy for another season. Then at the end of the season, Daz rang me and I decided to sign for Whitby in 2014.
Most memorable games would be between a few. I loved it when we beat Blyth Spartans 1-0 at home on Boxing Day. It was when Blyth were flying and they got to the third round of the FA Cup and were playing Birmingham. I actually wasn’t very well and I was on the phone to Daz a few days before saying I’m not very well and he was gonna leave me out. Then he rang me on Christmas Day asking how I was because he was really short of players and asked if I could play and give him as long as possible on the pitch, so I said I would. I had Vics on my chest, on my top I had some smelling salts, the lot, to make me feel better and I played centre back with Pelly. I had one of my best games in a Whitby shirt and we won 1-0 with Pelly scoring in the 90th minute and I played the full game. It was a great feeling to win that game with a depleted squad and how hard we dug in. I felt like collapsing when I got home but the result kept me sane.
