INTERVIEW: Bradley Mills

INTERVIEW: Bradley Mills

Bradley Mills reflects on the 2019/20 season, and looks ahead to the future at Whitby Town

Bradley Mills joined Whitby Town from Guisborough Town ahead of the 2019/20 BetVictor Northern Premier season. In his first season with the Blues, he made a total of 27 appearances and got himself seven assists throughout the campaign. The wing-back had a difficult time with injury in the second half of the season meaning that game time was limited.

Mills spoke to us to give his thoughts on his first campaign at the Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.

The lads did really well last season. When you look at the table at the end of the season we weren't a million miles off the play-offs and we had a few games in hand so I think it would have been interesting to see where we would have ended up without this pandemic. I think we played some good stuff throughout the season and I think that everyone will be excited to see where we can go.

I really enjoyed my first season playing for Whitby. I didn't expect it to be like what it was if I'm being honest as I didn't realise how much the club meant to people. I loved playing in front of the big crowds at the big games as that helped all of the lads so it was enjoyable and really good for me personally.

I think that the supporters have been class and brilliant with me especially. They've all treated me really well and I'd like to give a shout out to Connor, Faith and Cooper - they know who they are - as they're people who've really supported me. They come from good families and they're really good people. The fans have been amazing.

My favourite moment of the season has to be that night at Gloucester as it was unbelievable. When you look back to the tie on the Saturday, it was heartbreaking for the lads to concede that last minute equaliser after all the hard work they put in. It was such a quick turnaround of the game on the Monday and lads had to get themselves off work which wasn't possible for everyone. To go there with the squad we had and to win 3-1 was unbelievable and the crack and the banter in the changing room afterwards was great - I loved it. I wish we could re-live that night again.

The downside for me this season was the injury that I had. You can ask any player and they'll tell you that when you get an injury there's nothing worse and it's so frustrating. You really want to be involved and to play every game but that's part and parcel of football. It's been a tough year for me because I had my injury and then the coronavirus came about so it feels like I haven't played for a long time but it's one of those things you've got to deal with.

When I did come back it didn't last long and I don't want to go into it too deeply. I came on with five minutes to go and it had been so long since I'd played. I took the throw-in and then went in for a really strong challenge but I did win the ball. It didn't help with everyone running over and people making it look like they've been head butted as that blew everything out of proportion. It didn't need to be what it was but I think it's something that will only happen once in my career. It just happened at a very unfortunate time.

Looking ahead to next season we've got to be aiming for the play-offs again. We've got a strong and competitive squad and everyone wants the shirt so it all bodes really well. All of the lads work hard in training sessions because everyone wants to play so we've got to be aiming for promotion without a doubt. Another FA Cup run would be amazing as well and maybe we can get to the First Round proper this time.
