INTERVIEW: Ben Escritt

Liam Ryder22 Apr 2020 - 11:00

Interview by Andrew Snaith, with statistics provided by Steven Holliday

Goalkeeper Ben made 54 in appearances in total for Whitby between 2004/05 and 2009/10. He joined from Stokesley SC in July 2004, left for Spennymoor Town in August 2006 and returned to Whitby in March 2008, before leaving for Guisborough in 2010. He was best known for his outfield appearances, including a start on the right wing at Matlock Town in the 2005 League Cup Final First Leg.

First impressions of the club?
Warm, friendly atmosphere around the place with a few familiar faces on the walls and I felt at home straight away.

I was told after a game for Stokesley away to Birtley Town, at the end of the previous season, Harry Dunn had been watching. I didn't think anything of it and went on holiday to Mexico for a couple of weeks. The day I landed, I turn the phone on with a message to ring Harry back. The following day, I played in a 1-0 win at home to Gretna in the Micky Skinner Memorial Trophy - shot straight in at the deep end still jet lagged!

Memorable games?
Gretna would have to be one. My first league game away to Lincoln is another, another 1-0 win with Graham Robinson scoring that day on the opening day.

Davey Logan fined me a week's wages once for tying David McTiernan's shirt sleeves in a knot when he went to warm up. Logie tried to make a quick sub and called Macca back to get him on. Mac is stood on the side of the pitch with his head in his shirt but was stuck. Logie never put him on and went mad asking who it was? Robbo stitched me right up! We were crying with laughter though so it was worth it!

On nights away, I usually roomed with Macca and Graham Robinson and car shared with them. Some of us would meet up at the Fountain Pub - Macca, Nick Scaife, Craig Veart and me. We put some bets on in the Coral and headed over the moors. Usually me, Scaife or Craig would drive, I'm sure Macca never knew where the petrol station was! There are some more stories there but not for social media!
